You know that I was raised within a religious order myself. And there are things I was taught there to believe that I no longer believe, and things that were done there that I believe to have been cruel. I discount none of that for your monks, either. Their superstition and fear is wrong and worthy of derision, and their treatment of you ill done.
But if Chang Geng is capable of thinking for himself rather than going along with whatever he was told, he may nonetheless find some value in that way of thinking. If he is capable of disregarding the superstitions and taking from it only what is useful to him. Perhaps you must merely trust him to not be so feckless and spineless as the others you've known.
